Raja Yoga: The Royal Path of the Mind
Styles of yoga 3 illustrations Updated 2 Nov 2026
Raja yoga, the royal path, is the classical yoga of the mind: a step by step training of attention that leads from ethical living, posture and breath to concentration, meditation and absorption. It is usually identified with the system in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and is one of the four main paths of yoga alongside karma, bhakti and jnana yoga.
This page explains what raja yoga is, how its eight limbs work, what raja yoga meditation involves, simple steps to begin, and a few myths. Note that astrology also uses the words raj yoga for planetary combinations; that is a separate topic not covered here.

What is raja yoga?
The name raja yoga became widely used in later centuries to describe Patanjali's yoga, the path that treats the mind as the main field of practice. Where hatha yoga works primarily through the body and breath, raja yoga works primarily through attention. In practice they support each other: classical texts say hatha yoga is a ladder to raja yoga.

Raja yoga trains the mind the way asanas train the body: steadily, a little each day.

Some raja yoga meditation styles keep the eyes open, resting the gaze softly on a point.

Self observation, noticing your patterns of thought, is part of the path. A short note after sitting helps.
Teacher's cue: Write what you noticed, not how well you did.
The eight limbs as a path of mind training
Raja yoga follows the eight limbs. The first two, yama and niyama, steady how we live. Asana and pranayama steady the body and breath. Pratyahara turns the senses inward. The last three, dharana, dhyana and samadhi, carry focus inward until it becomes unbroken. The Yoga Sutras describe the obstacles along the way and how practice and non attachment overcome them.
Raja yoga meditation: how it works
Raja yoga meditation, or raj yoga meditation as it is often written, means sitting still and training attention on a chosen object: the breath, a sound, a point of light, or a quality such as peace. When attention wanders, you notice and return. Over time the gaps between distractions grow, and attention becomes steady and effortless. Several modern organisations teach their own forms of raja yoga meditation, sometimes with open eyes; the core idea of focused, calm attention is shared.
Simple steps to begin
- Choose one ethical focus for the week, such as speaking truthfully.
- Practise 15 minutes of asana to settle the body.
- Spend five minutes on a calm breath practice like anulom vilom.
- Rest attention on the inflow and outflow of air for ten minutes.
- Write a line or two about what you noticed.
Myths about raja yoga
- It is only for monks. Householders have practised it for centuries.
- It requires suppressing thoughts. It trains attention; thoughts settle on their own.
- It is the same as astrology's raj yoga. No; that is a separate subject about planetary combinations.
- It ignores the body. Posture and breath are two of its eight limbs.

Raja yoga in daily life
The path is not limited to the meditation cushion. Noticing a reaction before acting on it, keeping attention on one task at a time, and pausing to breathe before a difficult conversation are all raja yoga in small form. Over months these habits make the mind steadier at work, at home and during sitting practice.
Practise on an empty stomach, move slowly into each position and stop at any sharp pain. If you have an injury, a health condition or are pregnant, check with a doctor or an experienced teacher first.
