Prithvi Mudra: The Grounding Earth Gesture
Mudras 3 illustrations Updated 2 Nov 2026
Prithvi mudra is the simplest earth seal: fourth finger and thumb meet at the tips, and the remaining fingers fan out. Prithvi is the earth, and the ring finger is the earth digit in the old five element map of the hand, so meeting it with the thumb is said to strengthen qualities like stability, patience and endurance.
It is one of the easiest gestures to hold for a long time. Below you will find the hand position, a grounding practice for unsettled days, the traditional prithvi mudra benefits, how it compares with surya mudra, and what the evidence does not show.

How to do prithvi mudra
- Find a stable seat, ideally on the floor or with your feet flat if on a chair.
- Open both hands on the thighs, palms toward the ceiling.
- Bring each ring fingertip to meet its thumb tip.
- Let the other three fingers spread naturally.
- Shut the eyes and let breathing drop toward the navel.
- Stay for ten minutes or more, then open the hands slowly.

Prithvi mudra benefits in tradition
Benefits of prithvi mudra listed in mudra books include a sense of stability and confidence, support for weight gain in thin people, stronger nails, hair and bones, and better endurance. Some also call it helpful for fatigue. None of these physical claims has been studied properly, so treat them as tradition. What many people do notice is a calmer, more grounded feeling during the practice, which is a fair reason to use it on restless or anxious days.
Prithvi mudra vs surya mudra
| Prithvi mudra | Surya mudra | |
|---|---|---|
| Ring finger | Tip meets the thumb tip | Folded under the thumb |
| Element idea | Increases earth | Reduces earth, increases fire |
| Traditional use | Grounding, gaining strength | Warming, lightness |
Because they are said to work in opposite directions, tradition suggests not practising both in the same sitting.
A grounding practice for unsettled days
Sit on the floor, hands in prithvi mudra. Count four on each in breath and six on each out breath for three minutes. Then scan the body from the feet upward, noticing every point of contact with the floor. Finish with five slow breaths. This short routine pairs well with standing poses like tadasana and vrikshasana, which also emphasise rooting through the feet.
How long and how often
Ten to thirty minutes a day is typical, and it can be split into two or three shorter sessions. Morning or evening both work. There are no known risks. If weight gain is your goal, the gesture alone will not do it; a good diet and strength training matter far more, and underweight should be checked by a doctor.
Prithvi mudra with other hand gestures
Prithvi mudra sits among the five element gestures with varun, vayu, shunya and surya. Some people combine it with prana mudra, which also involves the ring finger. See them all on the yoga mudra guide.
Mudras are a traditional practice and research on them is limited. Use them alongside, never instead of, the care your doctor advises.
Questions people ask
What is prithvi mudra?

How long should I do prithvi mudra?
