Vayu Mudra: The Air Element Gesture

Mudras 3 illustrations Updated 2 Nov 2026

Vayu mudra is formed by curling the forefinger down onto the soft mound at the root of the thumb and laying the thumb over it. The word vayu translates as wind, and old hand maps give the forefinger to that element. Folding it under the thumb is said to calm an excess of the air element.

Read on for the precise shape, a short practice, traditional vayu mudra benefits, and how it differs from apana vayu and prana vayu mudra, which have similar names.

How to form vayu mudra

  1. Choose any upright seat, floor or chair.
  2. Turn the palms upward on the thighs or knees.
  3. Fold each index finger down so its tip reaches the soft mound at the root of the thumb.
  4. Lay the thumb across the folded finger with light weight.
  5. The three remaining fingers point outward, loose.
  6. Breathe evenly through the nose for 10 to 15 minutes, then shake the hands loose.

Vayu mudra benefits in tradition

Mudra books link vayu mudra with conditions blamed on excess air in Ayurveda: gas and bloating, joint stiffness, restlessness, tremor and anxious thoughts. In practice, many people use it as part of a quiet pause after meals or before sleep. There is no reliable research showing that the gesture itself treats any of these problems, so treat vayu mudra benefits as traditional and use it alongside sensible care. For digestion, poses on yoga for gas relief do more.

Vayu, apana vayu and prana vayu: three different mudras

MudraFingers
Vayu mudraIndex folded under the thumb
Apana vayu mudraIndex folded under the thumb, plus middle and ring tips on the thumb tip
Prana vayu mudraUsually means prana mudra: ring and little tips to the thumb
Udana vayu mudraSeveral fingertips joined to the thumb

The names come from the five vayus, or winds, of yoga physiology: prana, apana, udana, samana and vyana.

When and how long

Tradition suggests using vayu mudra when the related complaint is present and stopping when it eases, rather than holding it all day. Ten to fifteen minutes at a time is typical. It can be done after meals in vajrasana, during an evening sit, or quietly at a desk.

If your hands ache after a few minutes, loosen the thumb or practise one hand at a time.

Cautions

The gesture is safe. The caution is about expectations: persistent joint pain, tremor, bloating or anxiety need a doctor's assessment. Use the mudra as a calming habit, not a treatment. More gestures are listed on the yoga mudra guide.

Mudras are a traditional practice and research on them is limited. Use them alongside, never instead of, the care your doctor advises.

Questions people ask

What is vayu mudra?

It is the gesture of a forefinger tucked into the thumb root and held there by the thumb. It is linked with the air element.

How long should vayu mudra be held?

Ten to fifteen minutes at a time, and traditionally only while the related complaint is present.

Is vayu mudra good for gas?

Tradition recommends it for gas and bloating. Gentle poses and slower eating have more evidence; use the mudra as an extra.

Can I do vayu mudra after eating?

Yes. Many people sit in vajrasana with vayu mudra for a few minutes after meals.

What is the difference between vayu mudra and apana vayu mudra?

Apana vayu adds the middle and ring fingertips touching the thumb tip, and is known as the heart mudra.

Can children practise vayu mudra?

Older children can try it for a few minutes as a calm sitting game. There is no need for long holds, and it should never replace medical care for a child who is unwell.
