Surya Mudra: The Fire Element Gesture
Mudras 3 illustrations Updated 2 Nov 2026
Surya mudra is formed by bending the ring finger down so that its tip touches the base of the thumb, then pressing the thumb lightly over the bent ring finger. Surya is the sun; traditional hand charts assign fire to the thumb and earth to the fourth finger. Pressing earth down under fire is said to increase warmth and lightness, which is why the gesture is also called agni mudra, the fire seal.
Here is the hand shape, a short practice, the traditional surya mudra benefits, and the people who are usually told to avoid it.

Surya mudra benefits in tradition
Mudra books describe surya mudra benefits as increased body heat and metabolism, help with heaviness and sluggishness, and support for weight management and cold hands and feet. Agni mudra benefits are described the same way. These are traditional beliefs; no trial has shown a finger position altering metabolism or body weight. Its real value is as a calm morning pause, which you can combine with an active practice such as surya namaskar that genuinely raises energy use.
Surya mudra vs prithvi mudra
Both use the ring finger and thumb, but in opposite ways. In surya mudra the ring finger folds under the thumb, said to reduce earth and increase fire. In prithvi mudra the tips simply touch, said to increase earth for stability. If you want a grounding effect, choose prithvi; for a warming intention, surya.
Who should avoid it
Traditional advice says to skip surya mudra if you are underweight, feel weak or overheated, have acidity, or during fever. Because it is said to increase heat, many teachers also suggest avoiding it in hot weather or keeping sessions short. Anyone with a thyroid or weight concern should treat the mudra as a calm ritual, not a treatment, and follow their doctor's advice.
If you feel warm or restless during practice, switch to a cooling breath such as sheetali and end the session.
Combining surya mudra with practice
A good morning sequence: six rounds of sun salutations, five minutes of kapalbhati if suitable, then ten minutes seated in surya mudra with slow breathing. For weight goals, see mudra for weight loss for an honest look at what mudras can and cannot do. All gestures are listed on yoga mudra.
Mudras are a traditional practice and research on them is limited. Use them alongside, never instead of, the care your doctor advises.
Questions people ask
What is surya mudra?
The fourth finger bends into the thumb root, the thumb lies over it, and the whole seal is tied to the fire element.
Is agni mudra the same as surya mudra?
Yes, most teachers use the two names for the same gesture.
Does surya mudra help weight loss?
Tradition claims it, but there is no reliable evidence. Diet and activity are what change weight.
How long should I hold surya mudra?
Five to fifteen minutes, usually in the morning.
Can I do surya mudra in summer?
Many teachers suggest shorter sessions or skipping it in very hot weather because of its warming reputation.
Should I practise surya mudra with one hand or both?
Both hands is usual, resting on the knees. If one hand tires or aches, practise with the other and switch when comfortable.
