Linga Mudra: The Upright Thumb Gesture
Mudras 3 illustrations Updated 2 Nov 2026
Linga mudra is a two handed gesture: you interlace the fingers, keep the left thumb pointing straight up, and circle it with the right thumb and index finger. Linga here means mark or symbol, and the upright thumb is the mark at the centre of the gesture. Traditionally it is called a warming mudra, used in cold weather or at the start of a cold.
Below: how to form it, how long to hold it, what the tradition claims, and who should keep away from it. It is also written ling mudra.

Linga mudra benefits in tradition
Mudra books describe linga mudra as increasing internal heat. Linga mudra benefits commonly listed include help with colds, coughs and chest congestion in winter, and the gesture is sometimes called a mudra for cough. Hindi guides listing ling mudra ke fayde add slimming through inner heat. None of these claims has good scientific support. The practice is safe and can be a calming ritual, but colds and coughs need sensible care, and persistent symptoms need a doctor.
Linga mudra and the five elements
Old hand charts give the thumb to fire. Standing it upright and enclosing it with the other hand is said to concentrate and protect that fire, which is where the warming reputation comes from. The interlaced fingers bring the other elements together around it. This symbolism is part of the tradition and helps explain why the gesture is paired with winter and colds; it is not a description of physiology. Some modern books also link it with energy and confidence, again without research behind the claim. Treat linga mudra as one of many gestures you can use to bring attention to the breath on a cold morning.
How long and when
Traditional advice is to use linga mudra only when needed, for example in cold weather or at the start of a cold, for up to 15 minutes at a time, a few times a day, and to stop when you feel warm. Pair it with plenty of warm fluids and rest.
Who should avoid it
Because of its heating reputation, teachers advise skipping it during fever, in hot weather, with acidity or ulcers, or if you feel overheated. People with high blood pressure are often told to keep sessions short. For cooling instead, try sheetali or varun mudra.
Linga mudra and breathing for a cold
If you have a mild cold, gentle breathing can feel soothing: slow nasal breathing if the nose is clear, or bhramari humming. Avoid forceful practices like kapalbhati while unwell. See more on yoga for asthma and the lungs, and all gestures on yoga mudra.
Mudras are a traditional practice and research on them is limited. Use them alongside, never instead of, the care your doctor advises.
