Yoga for health 4 illustrations Updated 2 Nov 2026
Yoga for thyroid conditions can support well being, but it does not replace thyroid medicine or tests. Yoga may help with the tiredness, weight, stiffness, low mood and stress that often come with them.

What research says about yoga for thyroid
A few small studies in people with hypothyroidism on medicine found that regular yoga improved quality of life, fatigue and some cholesterol measures, and in some cases thyroid hormone levels changed slightly. The studies are small and short. Yoga is best seen as part of healthy living with a thyroid condition, alongside medicine, regular blood tests and a balanced diet.

Neck poses and the thyroid: the facts
Older manuals prescribe shoulder stand, plough and fish, reasoning that squeezing or stretching the throat wakes up the gland. Research has not shown these shapes altering thyroid output. Shoulder stand and plough also carry neck risks. Gentle supported versions are fine if you enjoy them; skip the full poses unless you have learned them safely.
Pranayama and mudra for thyroid
Pranayama for thyroid routines often include ujjayi, bhramari and anulom vilom. They help stress and calm. With hyperthyroidism, choose cooling, calming breaths and avoid forceful practices like kapalbhati and bhastrika. A mudra for thyroid, often a gesture linked to the throat chakra, may be part of quiet sitting but has no proven effect.
Safety with thyroid conditions
- Keep taking your medicine as prescribed; never stop it because you feel better with yoga.
- With an overactive thyroid and a fast heart rate, avoid vigorous practice until your doctor says it is safe.
- Take thyroid tablets as directed, usually on an empty stomach, and practise afterwards as your doctor advises.
- Report new symptoms such as palpitations, weight change or swelling in the neck to your doctor.
This page is general information, not medical advice. If you have a diagnosed condition, are pregnant, recently had surgery or take regular medicine, ask your doctor which practices suit you, and stop at any sharp pain, dizziness or chest discomfort.
Questions people ask
Will yoga fix a thyroid problem on its own?
No. Yoga can support energy, mood and stress, but thyroid conditions need medical treatment.
Which yoga is good for thyroid?
A mixed session: standing work, mild back bends, a supported chest opener, legs on the wall and slow breaths.
Does sarvangasana help the thyroid?
That is the old belief; studies have not confirmed it, and the pose can strain the neck. Supported alternatives are safer.
Is kapalbhati good for thyroid?
Many people use it, yet it is a poor match for an overactive thyroid or any heart symptoms.
Can I stop thyroid medicine if I do yoga?
No. Only your doctor can change your dose, based on blood tests.
