Father of Yoga: Who Gets the Title and Why
Yoga basics 3 illustrations Updated 2 Nov 2026
The father of yoga, in most textbooks and quiz answers, is Maharishi Patanjali, the sage who compiled the Yoga Sutras. He did not invent yoga, which existed long before him, but he organised it into a clear system of eight limbs, and that system still shapes how yoga is taught.
The honest answer to who invented yoga is that nobody did. Yoga grew over many centuries. Below are the different answers people give, why each one makes sense, and related facts such as the yoga capital of the world.

Who is known as the father of yoga?
Most Indian textbooks and exams answer Maharishi Patanjali. He is credited with compiling the Yoga Sutras, a text of 196 short verses in four chapters that define yoga, describe the obstacles of the mind and lay out the eight limbs. Scholars place the text roughly two thousand years ago, though exact dating is debated. Because Patanjali turned scattered teachings into one system, he is called the father of yoga, or sometimes the founder of yoga as a structured discipline.

- The eight limbs
Patanjali's lasting gift is a path: eight limbs that move from how we live to how we meditate.
Teacher's cue: Start where you are; the first step is as important as the last.
Who invented yoga?
No single person invented yoga. Ideas of meditation, breath control and discipline appear in the Vedas and Upanishads, which are older than the Yoga Sutras. Some people point to seals from the Indus Valley civilisation that show seated figures, though what those images mean is uncertain. Yogic tradition itself speaks of a legendary first yogi who passed the knowledge on to seven sages. So who invented yoga in India has a layered answer: it grew out of many generations of seekers and teachers. Read more on history of yoga.
Who is the father of ashtanga yoga?
If ashtanga means the eight limbs, the answer is again Patanjali. If it means the modern ashtanga vinyasa series, that method was developed and spread by teachers in Mysore during the twentieth century. The two are different things that share a name; see ashtanga yoga.
Other names linked to yoga's development
- Swatmarama: author of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the main text of hatha yoga.
- The Bhagavad Gita: describes karma, bhakti and jnana yoga as paths.
- Twentieth century teachers: several Indian teachers brought postural yoga to a worldwide audience; their students founded many of today's styles.
Yoga capital of the world and of India
Rishikesh in Uttarakhand is widely called the yoga capital of the world and the yoga capital of India. Set where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills, it has hosted ashrams and yoga schools for generations and draws students from across the globe. Mysore is also famous as a centre for ashtanga yoga.
Why the question matters
Knowing that yoga grew slowly, through many teachers, helps keep it in perspective. It is a living tradition rather than one person's invention. For practice, what matters most is how you use it today; start with what is yoga and the beginner guide.
Practise on an empty stomach, move slowly into each position and stop at any sharp pain. If you have an injury, a health condition or are pregnant, check with a doctor or an experienced teacher first.
